Lake Retba, known as the Pink Lake, is one of Senegal’s most fascinating sites, famous for its unique shifting colour and its connection to the Paris–Dakar rally.
Located 35 km north-east of Dakar, this salt lake changes from pink to mauve depending on the light and salt concentration. Its high salinity lets visitors float effortlessly, while local workers continue the traditional harvesting of salt.
A pirogue ride, a walk or horse ride around the shore, and a 4x4 trip through the former Paris–Dakar dunes reveal the many faces of this remarkable landscape.
